Why is our health the first to go, when we are overwhelmed by work and family life?
My one year anniversary of working full time outside of the home is coming up in about two weeks. When I started this job last year, I had no idea I would look up a year later and be in a place where I struggle to run a mile or be at a weight I haven’t seen since the birth of our five year old. Prior to this season of my life, a healthy diet and regular, rigorous exercise were staples in my life. I just don’t feel like me when I go too long without exercising or when I am putting unhealthy, processed food in my body.
I know I’m not alone in this fight to keep a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy life in the midst of full time work and a full time family. It’s easy in this season of life to take on a “woe is me” attitude.
“I work so hard. I don’t have time exercise…I deserve this piece of cake…I give enough to everyone else. I don’t have the mental or physical energy to monitor my own health.” These may not be your exact words or thoughts, but can you relate?
I decided there are two primary lies we believe that sacrifice our health:
I am saving time when I skip out on healthy living. We convince ourselves that sacrificing our health makes us more productive, because it’s one less thing on our to do list. Repeat after me: The weight gain, high blood pressure and mood swings that result from not taking care of myself are not saving me time. They are costing me time in lack of confidence, creativity and doctor’s visits.
I am selfish to take more time away from my family. Sacrificing your health is not a benefit to your family. How is a moody, tired, sick woman helping her family? We are not required to let ourselves go to take care of the needs of our family. We are always influencing our family. We live life together. Ask them to join you in living a healthier lifestyle. Your health and wellness is a priority. Set the example and watch them follow (sooner or later).
When you are feeling weak in making adjustments to live a healthier life, remember this promise…
Lord, help me to remember…
1 Corinthians 6:19,20 (NLT)
19Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. (emphasis added)
It’s your turn: How has your health suffered because of work and family demands? What one step can you take towards a healthier lifestyle this week?
